Terumah and Maaser (Priestly Tithes)
In ancient Israel, farmers gave special portions of their harvest to priests and temple workers as sacred gifts and support.
In biblical times, when the Jewish people lived in their own land, they had a system of sharing the harvest. When a farmer brought in crops, they would set aside certain portions—called *terumah* (an offering) and *maaser* (a tithe, or tenth)—and give them to the Kohanim (priests) and Levites (temple workers). Think of it like an ancient religious tax: the priests didn't own land, so the community fed them through these contributions.
The system had layers of meaning. On one level, it was purely practical—the priests performed rituals and maintained the temple, so they needed support. But it also carried spiritual weight: by giving these portions, farmers acknowledged that all their abundance came from God, not just from their own hard work. The act of setting aside and giving away was itself considered an act of holiness.
After the Second Temple was destroyed, these practices couldn't be fully observed anymore—there was no temple, no priesthood in the old sense. But Jewish thinkers never stopped studying the laws of terumah and maaser. They became a central subject of rabbinic teaching: thousands of detailed rules about how much to give, when, to whom, what happens if you make a mistake. In that way, even when the practice itself faded, the *idea* of it—the principle of sacred giving and acknowledgment of divine providence—remained woven into Jewish thought.
