Rabbi Chaim Stein, longtime rosh yeshiva of the Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland who in 1940 led a group of its students out of Lithuania, died at age 98.

George Ellery Hale, the solar astronomer who discovered magnetic fields in sunspots and organized several record-setting telescopes, was born in Chicago.
