Swami Abhedananda, a direct disciple of Ramakrishna who led the Vedanta Society of New York, was born in Calcutta on this day in 1866.

Swami Muktananda, who carried the Siddha Yoga tradition of his teacher Bhagavan Nityananda to a worldwide audience, died at Ganeshpuri on this day in 1982.

Chemist William Ramsay, born 2 October 1852 in Glasgow, went on to identify the noble gases argon, neon, krypton and xenon, work recognized with the 1904 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
