Ceuta
Ceuta (Sabta), on the North African coast at the Strait of Gibraltar (today a Spanish enclave bordering Morocco), was an important port and scholarly town of the medieval Muslim west. The Maliki judge and biographer al-Qadi Iyad (d. 1149), author of al-Shifa, was born and served as qadi there; the geographer al-Idrisi (d. 1165) is also associated with the city.
