R. Avi Weiss

1944 CE · Modern · Riverdale (Bronx, NYC)

Rabbi Avraham 'Avi' Weiss (b. 1944) is the founding rabbi of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale and the founder of Open Orthodoxy — a contemporary movement seeking to combine rigorous halachic observance with maximum inclusivity, intellectual openness, and expanded roles for women in Jewish religious life. Born in Brooklyn and ordained at Yeshiva University, he served at HIR from 1973 until his retirement in 2015.

In 1999 Weiss founded Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, an Open Orthodox rabbinical school in Riverdale; in 2009 he founded Yeshivat Maharat, the first Orthodox institution to ordain women as clergy (under the titles maharat, rabba, and later — controversially — rabbi). Weiss is also a prominent Soviet Jewry and human rights activist, known for his 'open tent' approach to Orthodoxy and for the institutional break this occasioned with the centrist Modern Orthodox establishment.
