R. Yosef Albo

1380 CE1444 CE · AH · Daroca (Aragon)

Yosef Albo was a Spanish-Jewish philosopher and theologian active in the Kingdom of Aragon during the late 14th and 15th centuries. He lived in Daroca and Calatayud and was a student of the renowned Ḥasdai Crescas. Albo is best known as the author of Sefer HaIkarim (Book of Principles), a philosophical work composed after the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492, in which he systematized Jewish theology and articulated three fundamental principles of the Jewish faith: belief in God, divine reward and punishment, and the Torah. His work became influential in Jewish thought as an accessible presentation of Jewish philosophy and remained widely studied in Jewish communities.
