Olah (Burnt Offering)
A sacrifice completely burned away—nothing kept back, offered entirely to God as a gift of total devotion.
In ancient Jewish practice, an olah (or 'burnt offering') was an animal brought to the Temple altar and burned entirely—unlike other sacrifices where priests or the person bringing the offering got to eat a portion. This complete consumption was the point: it expressed unreserved dedication to God, holding nothing back. You might think of it like writing a letter to someone you deeply respect, then burning it unread—the gesture itself, the commitment it represents, matters more than any practical benefit.
These offerings came in two varieties. Some were purely voluntary—an individual might bring one as a spontaneous gift or expression of devotion (called an 'olat nedavah'). Others were required by Jewish law: the daily offering (tamid) made every morning and evening, the additional offerings on holidays (musaf), and those required for atonement in certain circumstances. Over centuries, Jewish sages in the Mishnah and later codes like Maimonides' Mishneh Torah developed detailed rules about which animals were acceptable, how the ritual should proceed, and what spiritual intentions should accompany the act.
Even after the Temple was destroyed and these sacrifices could no longer be performed, Jewish thinkers continued to reflect on what the olah represented—complete surrender, the desire to draw close to God with nothing held in reserve. Some mystical interpreters saw in the burning itself a symbol of the soul's aspiration to return to its divine source.
