Barukh HaLevi Epstein was a Lithuanian Jewish scholar, exegete, and author of the early 20th century. Born in Pinsk, he was the son of Yitzhak Halevi Epstein and came from a notable rabbinic family. He is best known for his Torah commentary Mekhilta d'Rabbi Yishmael al ha-Torah and his work Torah Temimah, a comprehensive compilation of aggadic and midrashic interpretations on the Torah with careful source attribution. Epstein was also a prolific author of works on Jewish thought and practice. He lived through a period of significant upheaval in Eastern European Jewish life and devoted himself to scholarly and educational pursuits, seeking to preserve and transmit Jewish learning in an era of rapid change.
