Sotah (The Wayward-Wife Trial)
A biblical trial where a priest would determine a wife's fidelity through a ritual involving sacred water and written blessings.
In ancient Israel, when a husband suspected his wife of infidelity but had no witnesses, Jewish law provided a formal procedure called sotah (literally 'the straying one'). The wife would be brought to the Temple, where the priest would write God's name and curses on parchment, dissolve the writing in water, and have her drink it. According to the biblical account, if she was guilty, the water would cause her belly to swell and her body to waste away; if innocent, she would remain unharmed and could bear children.
Over centuries, Jewish sages grappled with this strange ritual. The Mishnah and Talmud debated its precise procedures, the husband's obligations, and the conditions under which it could be performed. By the time of Maimonides (12th century), the ritual had already ceased—the sages had effectively suspended it centuries earlier, interpreting the halting of the Temple's morning offering as the endpoint of the practice. This wasn't seen as a flaw in the law, but rather as a sign that conditions for its use had become impossible to meet.
The sotah trial has fascinated modern scholars and theologians as a window into ancient Israelite concepts of divine justice, gender, and oath-taking. Some read it as a rare protection for women (preventing false accusations without proof); others emphasize its coercive dimensions. Jewish interpreters have consistently reframed the ritual not as magical, but as a mechanism for divine revelation—God's hidden knowledge made manifest through sacred procedure.
