Tzaraat (Biblical 'Leprosy', Ritual Affliction)
A mysterious biblical skin affliction that made a person ritually impure and symbolized spiritual contamination from harmful speech.
Tzaraat is the condition described in the biblical book of Leviticus—sometimes translated as 'leprosy,' though scholars debate whether it was a real disease or a ritual category altogether. When someone developed certain skin marks, a priest would examine them and declare the person tamei (ritually impure), which meant they couldn't participate in the community's religious life until they healed and underwent purification. The affliction could also appear on clothing or on the walls of houses, which made the rabbinic interpreters wonder: how could a disease spread to bricks and wool?
By the rabbinic period, Jewish teachers had woven tzaraat into a moral teaching. They connected it—especially through wordplay and interpretive tradition—to lashon hara, the harm caused by malicious or careless speech. A person who spoke ill of others would contract tzaraat as a visible, public reminder that their words had spiritual weight. This wasn't always framed as punishment in a harsh sense, but more as a natural consequence: your words affected the world around you, and the affliction was a call to repentance and silence. The person had to leave the camp, sit alone, and confront what they had done.
