Tzedakah Before Tefillah
Give charity before you pray, so your prayer rises up purified and whole.
Jewish tradition developed a practice of giving a small amount of money or charity to the poor before reciting morning prayers. The idea rests on a verse from the Psalms: 'I, in righteousness, will see Your face'—interpreted to mean that acts of justice and generosity prepare us spiritually to stand before God.
This custom emerged as a way to understand prayer not as isolated words spoken to heaven, but as something that needs preparation. Just as you might wash your hands before entering a sacred space, you 'wash' your prayers by first doing an act of kindness. Over time, this became a widespread Jewish practice, especially in morning liturgy, and was codified in Jewish legal texts as a meaningful custom rather than a strict requirement.
The practice teaches something subtle: prayer is most powerful when it grows from a life already turned toward others. The act of giving—even a small coin—reorients your heart before you speak to God.
