Qafih served as a respected decisor (poseq) and teacher in the Yemenite community, and his writings and responsa exercised significant influence on Yemenite practice. He was also known for his efforts to preserve and transmit the distinctive traditions of Yemenite Judaism during a period of considerable communal transition.

What they did here

Led the Yemenite Jewish community as chief rabbi and preserved Yemenite halakhic traditions through his writings and leadership.

Sana'a (Yemen) in this era

In late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century Sanaa, under the rule of the Zaydi Imamate—a Shi'a dynasty that had governed the Yemenite highlands for centuries—R. Yihya Qafih lived and taught within a Jewish community that, though dhimmi (protected minority) status imposed restrictions on dress, movement, and public standing, maintained a rich intellectual and liturgical life. The Jews of Sanaa were concentrated in a quarter of the city, where they worked primarily as artisans, metalworkers, and merchants; despite legal disabilities, they had preserved distinctive Yemenite liturgical practices and legal traditions stretching back to the Geonic age. Qafih became the spiritual and halakhic authority of the community during a period when Ottoman administrative reforms (and later Ottoman withdrawal) created both uncertainty and opportunity for Jewish self-governance. His meticulous work on Mishnaic commentary and his role in maintaining the community's religious identity made him a towering figure in Yemenite Jewish life during these final decades before the mass emigration to Palestine that would transform Sanaa's Jewish presence entirely.
