Bitachon (Trust in God)
Trust in God means actively relying on divine providence to meet your needs while taking responsibility for your own actions.
Bitachon is not passive faith or wishful thinking—it's a living, dynamic trust that shapes how you move through the world. Imagine someone who genuinely believes their essential needs will be met by God, so they stop obsessing over security, stop cutting corners to get ahead, and instead focus their energy on what they can actually control: their character, their choices, their service to others. That's bitachon in action.
The concept evolved dramatically across Jewish mystical thought. Early kabbalists in the Zohar treated it as a protective force—a spiritual armor that shields you from harm and from being swayed by false promises and illusions. But over centuries, especially through the Hasidic movement (18th–20th centuries), bitachon became something more intimate and personal. Teachers like Nachman of Breslov and the Ba'al Shem Tov showed how trust could be a remedy for despair, a way to transform worry into cleaving to God, and even a gateway to joy and spiritual freedom.
What makes bitachon distinct is that it's not separate from effort. You work, you plan, you act—but you do so without the paralysis of fear or the corruption of greed. You trust that what you need will come, and that frees you to be honest, generous, and fully present to your life.
