Modern City Eruv
A 20th-century halachic issue. Classical sources discuss only the underlying principles; the canonical contemporary responsa (Igrot Moshe, Tzitz Eliezer, Yabia Omer, Minchat Shlomo) are not yet ingested in full.
The halachic and engineering question of whether a modern urban area can be constituted as a private domain via an eruv. Defining modern dispute: R. Moshe Feinstein (Igrot Moshe OC 1:139; 4:87-88) ruled NYC could not be enclosed; the Satmar Rebbe agreed; most Manhattan rabbis since (R. Menachem Genack, R. Hershel Schachter for OU) disagreed and a Manhattan eruv now functions. Each city's eruv is a major halachic project.
