Tum'at Zav / Zavah (Discharge Impurity)
In Jewish law, certain bodily discharges create a state of ritual impurity that requires purification before approaching sacred space.
Ancient Jewish law recognized that some bodily flows—beyond the ordinary—mark a person as ritually impure, unable to enter the Temple or touch sacred objects until they undergo purification. This concept comes from the Torah's Book of Leviticus and was elaborated in detail in the Mishnah, a central rabbinic text. The impurity applies to abnormal discharges from the reproductive system: in men (called a 'zav'), and in women (called a 'zavah'). Think of it not as moral shame but as a kind of spiritual status—like a person in a hospital quarantine who needs to go through a procedure before re-entering normal community life.
What makes this impurity distinctive is that it's contagious in a specific way: a zav or zavah can transmit impurity to others through direct contact or even by sitting on furniture that others then touch. This led to detailed rabbinic discussions about purity laws in everyday life—who can sit where, what counts as contact, how many days of waiting are needed. Later Jewish mystical thinkers, especially in medieval Kabbalah, began to read these physical laws as maps of spiritual states, seeing the discharge impurity as reflecting a disruption in divine flow or spiritual vitality that needs restoration.
